There is a particular quiet that arrives a few weeks after something good happens.
You worked toward it for a long time. The promotion, the house, the qualification, the number in the account, the finish line you had been running at for years. When it arrived, it was genuinely good. People were pleased for you and you were rightly proud.
And then, faster than you expected, it became simply how things are.
Not disappointing. Just normal. The odd part is not that the feeling faded. It is what you caught yourself doing afterwards, which was looking at the next thing on the list and believing, with roughly the same confidence as last time, that this one will be different.
That confidence is worth examining. It is one of the most persistent forecasting errors we make about our own lives.
We are poor witnesses to our own future
Psychologists Daniel Gilbert and Timothy Wilson gave this pattern a name: miswanting. It describes the consistent tendency to desire and pursue things that do not, in the end, deliver the satisfaction we anticipated.1 Their wider body of work identifies what they call the impact bias. We overestimate both how intensely a future event will affect us and how long that effect will last.2
The finding is more striking than it first sounds, because the error runs in both directions.
In one well-known study, assistant professors were asked how happy they expected to be after a tenure decision. They predicted that being denied would be seriously and lastingly damaging. When researchers looked at people who had actually been through it, those denied tenure were not measurably less happy than those who had succeeded.3 The decision mattered enormously at the time. Its emotional weight, measured some distance down the track, mattered far less than anyone had predicted.
If we are that wrong about the things we dread, how accurate could we possibly be about the things we want?
The forecast is a photograph
Part of the answer is a habit of attention with an unglamorous name: focalism. When we imagine a future event, we imagine the event. We do not imagine the rest of the life it will be embedded in.4
Picture the promotion and you picture the moment. The call, the announcement, the look on someone’s face, the new title under your name. What you do not picture is the following Tuesday. The same commute. The inbox that refilled overnight. The ordinary tiredness at four in the afternoon. The small domestic friction waiting at home. None of that disappears because something good happened, and this ordinariness is most of the hours of our day.
So the forecast is not really a forecast. It is a photograph, cropped tight on the best moment, and we make serious decisions as though we are going to live inside the photograph. We will be living in the wider frame, and most of the wider frame was already there.
Then the ground moves
The forecast is one problem. What happens after the milestone arrives is another.
A gain that felt enormous when it arrived begins to become familiar. And familiar things gradually stop registering as gains in quite the same way.
Psychologists call this hedonic adaptation. It is not a defect, and it is not absolute: some changes alter our wellbeing for a long time, and people adapt at different rates. But the broad tendency is powerful. Many improvements that once seemed extraordinary become steadily more ordinary simply by remaining present.
The same capacity also helps us adjust to many setbacks that initially feel overwhelming. Adaptation works in both directions, and good things are not exempt. The increase in pay you aspired to becomes just the salary. The house you could hardly believe you had bought becomes the home you live in. The car that gave you a buzz to drive becomes just your car.
The effect is that a real achievement quietly changes category. It arrives as a summit. Over time, it becomes the floor you are standing on. Nothing has been taken away; the achievement is still yours. It has simply become normal enough that your attention starts reaching beyond it.
Nothing in that process requires you to have chosen badly.
The mistaken job we give the milestone
This is where the useful move is, and it is smaller than it sounds.
The mistake is rarely in wanting the thing. Most milestones are worth wanting. Promotions can bring money, autonomy and greater scope to do useful work. A home can bring stability. Qualifications open doors that were previously closed. These are real goods, and there is nothing sophisticated about pretending otherwise.
The trouble begins with the second job we quietly give them.
Alongside those real benefits, we ask the milestone to settle something. To stop the small flinch when a friend’s good news arrives. To make us finally feel that we have done enough. To give us permission to rest.
That is the job it cannot reliably do. Not because it was the wrong milestone, but because the settling was never in the milestone’s gift.
Before the next milestone, not after: separate two questions.
The first: what does this actually bring, once you step outside the photograph and look at the whole frame?
The second, and separate from it: what am I expecting it to settle?
The first deserves a serious answer, and usually gets one. The second is where much of the disappointment begins, and it is almost never asked out loud.
There is a small practice here, if you want one. Before the next milestone lands, write down what you expect it to change. Be specific about it. Not “things will feel better,” but what will actually be different three months later, on a day like any other. Then keep the note, and read it again three months later.
What you may find is that the milestone delivered much of what it could reasonably deliver. The disappointment came from the other things you had quietly attached to it.
The disappointment was never about the photograph. It was about mistaking it for the whole frame.
Nothing here argues against ambition
Wanting things, working hard for them and reaching them is a decent way to spend a life. Several of the things you are probably proudest of came from exactly that, and the version of you that pursued them was not deluded.
The argument is narrower. The next milestone will not feel the way you are currently imagining it. Knowing that in advance costs you nothing, and it saves you the particular flatness of being surprised by it again.
Which leaves a harder question, and a better one. If no single achievement was ever going to settle it, what would?
We will come back to that question, because it deserves more than a paragraph. But there is something more immediate to deal with next. While the chase is running it is being paid for, and the cost lands somewhere that rarely shows up in our accounting of it. The next essay is about who actually picks up the bill.
